| Jay studied alpaca shearing with Bill Watkins and "apprenticed" under two additional experienced shearers who made comments such as "you're a natural". He has sheared Angora Goats too (but prefers alpacas!). "I just wanted to say thanks again. I think you went way beyond what I paid for. Thanks for the great shearing job and all the advice." | Great info about shearing from Bill Watkins, Shearing Trainer Additional Details You will need to provide at least three people to help, however a fourth is optimal. Your team will be responsible for: bringing the alpacas to the shearing area; assisting w/ restraint; holding 'paca heads; sorting/bagging fleeces & collecting fleece samples for histograms if desired. A clean, dry place out of the wind w/ good lighting & good power close at hand is required; a garage often works well. I'll bring everything I need including a mat and Pro-Tie. It is easier if clear plastic bags are pre-labeled for fleece storage, 3 for each animal to be shorn (one for prime fleece, one for 2nds, one for 3rds). Also needed: pre-labeled baggies for fleece to be sent for histogram testing, if desired; brooms and shop-vac to keep the shearing area clean & to prevent color contamination; dry alpacas, already rounded up & preferably picked as clean as possible (if not a show-fleece, then they can be shop-vacuumed ahead of time). And bring your sense of humor! |
