Ken Michaelis from
Finger Lakes Alpacas participating in the wet lab portion of a past neonatal seminar.

Alpaca Neonatal
Clinic

All proceeds from this seminar will be donated to camelid research at U Mass Amherst and Colorado State University.
In a recent e-mail from Dr Johnson he said:
"I am off to Argentina on Thursday for the 4th World Camelid Congress so will
be gone for two weeks... doing 4 neonatal labs there."
Jay’s note:
"The presentations that Dr Johnson did at the World Camelid Conference were an abridged version of what he’ll offer to us and all were “sold out”. And you can have the opportunity to learn from this world renowned presenter at AuSable Valley Alpacas!”

Neonatal Clinic
The clinic is comprised of 6 hours of lecture and 90 minutes of wet lab for each registrant.
The lecture will cover reproductive anatomy and physiology, breeding and pregnancy diagnosis
options, gestational development, care of the pregnant dam, normal and abnormal criation and
care of the newborn as well as the high risk cria. The lab, using donated dead crias and
uterine simulators, will challenge registrants to diagnose the contents of the uterus, discuss
a proposed delivery plan and deliver the crias.
As part of the clinic there is a wet lab that uses real cria in uterine simulators to teach breeders how to identify and correct dystocias.
We will need still born or euthanized crias for the wet lab portion of the seminar. If you or someone you know should have either of these unfortunate events occur, please consider donating the cria for education in the alpaca industry.
The cria would need to be frozen in a compact size position for subsequent transport. Attendees that bring crias with them will be rewarded with something from the presenter.
Please contact me to make arrangements.
Friday night
at 10:30 pm we had a female that needed some help. I went in to
help with the front legs of the cria, as only one was
presenting. The experience and knowledge I received from his
class (Dr Johnson’s Neonatal Clinic) has given me the confidence
to help with the deliveries.
